Serum vs Moisturizer: What’s the difference?

Serum vs Moisturizer: What’s the difference?

Serums are lightweight products with a high concentration of actives. They have smaller molecules which is why they are absorbed faster and penetrate deeper into your skin. Depending on the ingredients it contains, serums target specific skin concerns like brightening the skin or preventing acne.

Moisturizers, on the other hand, hydrate your skin and lock in moisture. They come in usually as creams with three main types of ingredients: humectants, occlusives, and emollients. Humectants attract moisture into the outermost layer of your skin which is the stratum corneum. Occlusives protect the skin from moisture loss by mimicking its natural barrier. Emollients soften dry skin and like occlusives, they form a barrier to seal moisture in your skin.

Key difference between Serums and Moisturizers

The key difference between these two is that serums penetrate deeper into the skin and moisturizers work on the surface. Serums deliver a high concentration of actives into deeper layers of the skin to achieve specific goals whereas moisturizers work by drawing in moisture to the surface of the skin and creating a protective barrier to lock in moisture.

Whether you would need both a serum and a moisturizer in your skincare routine will depend on your skin type. A serum will generally be enough for someone with oily skin. Whereas, if you have dry skin, having both will be most beneficial. When layering your products, you generally have to start with serums first as they are usually thinner than moisturizers which will then seal in the serum.
